Ceramic, Enamel Or Glass Material for Cookware - Which One Is For You?

Taking time to choose for your cookware material is worth-spending. Opting for ceramic, enamel or glass cookware can be a fine selection. In fact, it's your choice. While these materials possess benefits in their own unique ways, cooking in pots and pans of your dreams can make your life incredibly easier.

Glass Cookware

All these materials have good heating resistance that can hold heat for a long time. Typically, a ceramic cookware is either made of clay, or comes with a safe, non-scratch ceramic glaze with a bacteria-resistant surface. It specially emits far-infra red heat that is beneficial for cooking. Ceramic is a good heat conductor that distributes heat evenly. Its exceptional ability to resist cracking on both high heating and cooling, recognized the cookware as extreme temperature units. Ceramic is highly durable and very versatile for use in any conventional cooking from a stove top, microwave or toaster, under broiler, or on a barbecue grill.

Glass Cookware

Cookware made of enamel basically comes in two versions, the enamel on steel, and the enameled cast iron. Enamel is a porcelain-fused coating that is non-reactive and non-stick metal giving the shiny and often-colored surface of pots and pans. Enamel prevents the core metal from leaking into the food during the cooking process by acting as the hard barrier between the food and the iron base.

The heat diffusion properties of enameled cast iron pots range it as an energy-efficient cookware. It can retain heat for longer periods with only a moderate amount of heat used. Enameled cookware is very durable and works well with every type of cooking from conventional to oven to the grill. It is among the easiest to clean cookware that is even dishwasher-safe.

Glass cookware is beautiful and encouraging. The see-though glass ceramic material allows you to handily monitor what you're cooking with a less tendency of overcooking food. Even though glass does not distribute heat evenly, it can stand extreme temperatures, and is very efficient in warming food up in a toaster or oven. Heat-resistant glass cookware is practically a smart suggestion for mixing, cooking, storing and serving. It saves time by doing away with additional food storage containers. The only thing to bear in mind is the fragility of glass that can break under impact.

All pots and pans must be washed thoroughly inside and out every after use. While glass and ceramic cookware can be one of the best cookware items in your kitchen, extra care in handling and cleaning is only essential. You can buy cleansers purposely made for glass and ceramic. So as not to scratch the surface of the cookware, only use nylon scrub for your ceramics and glass, never a steel wool. Likewise, if you find mineral streaks from water clinging on them, boil any full-strength vinegar for your final rinse. All glass and ceramic-glass cookware is dishwasher-safe.

Soaking the bottom of my enameled pans and baking trays in a mild dish cleanser for a few hours helped loosen the baked-on grease. Similarly, eliminating the hardest burnt-on foods were plain and easy after I soaked the pan's bottom in water and 5 tablespoons salt for a few hours, and bringing the mixture into boil. If you love to bake like me, chances are, you will have a bunch of glass cookware in your kitchen cabinets.

Regardless of what material you pick for your pots and pans, knowing what you like best and determining what you need most, are two most basic elements for a worth-picking choice. New styles of ceramic, enameled, or glass cookware can be all-around and attractive to have and use. If you finally have found an attractive, heavy-duty, convenient to clean, and efficient to use cookware that fits your budget, you would not want to pass up such an offer.

Safety First With Glass Ceramic Cookware

Glass ceramic cookware has to be chosen carefully since there are some materials that can not only damage the stovetop but can also harm the person who is doing the cooking on the stove. There are ceramic cookware sets that are made to go in the microwave or in the conventional oven but are not made to be used as glass ceramic cookware. Glass ceramic cookware has to be able to withstand the process of heating quickly since the stovetops heat up extremely fast and can damage pans and pots that are not made to withstand those types of temperature changes. The glass ceramic cookware also has to have a smooth bottom to it because the stovetop can become scratched or cracked if the items used to cook on it are rough in any way.

Glass Cookware

Cautions

Glass Cookware

When using the glass cookware, the pots and pans should be placed on a burner that most closely fits the pot or pan being used. If this is not done, the person cooking can easily be burned by the open surface of the burner that is not covered by the pot or pan. Another caution about using glass ceramic cookware is that it should not be placed on the cook top dry. In other words, the pots and pans that are used should have at least one ingredient in it when it is placed on the stovetop and the burner is lit so that the pot or pan does not become damaged from the high heat with nothing inside of it.

Another caution when using a glass ceramic stovetop is that the cookware should not be made of glass. Glass is not a very forgiving material which means that when it is heated quickly to a high heat the glass can crack or shatter. This would do damage to the ceramic stovetop as well as to the chef that is using the cookware. Copper pans also should never be used as glass ceramic cookware because the copper will melt the ceramic stovetop and then meld with it, ruining the stove altogether. Even pans that have some amount of copper in them will do this, so chefs should check to make sure that the pot or pan does not have any copper in it, and if there is any question, it should not be used at all.

Stainless steel products are usually the best option in glass ceramic cookware since stainless steel heats up readily, distributes the heat evenly and is very durable. Stainless steel products are also very smooth on the bottom so that they will not scratch the surface of the stove.

Vision Cookware - Revolutionary See-Through Cookware

Vision cookware was originally manufactured by Corning, which has since went through Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and emerged as a privately held company called World Kitchen - LLC. World Kitchen currently has business units that manufacture such well-known and well-respected brand names as Corning Ware, Pyrex and Baker's Secret. Although the cookware is still for sale, a good number of published reports state that the cookware is not being manufactured anymore in its original design.

Glass Cookware

Product Information

Glass Cookware

The Vision cookware was revolutionary in that it was totally see-through, yet could be extremely serviceable. By being see through, a cook can check on cooking progress of the food without lifting lid and changing the temperature of the food that is being cooked. This cookware is so functional that it can be used on the stove top, in the oven or microwave, or placed in the refrigerator or freezer without requiring additional storage containers. It is recommended to bring the cookware and stored food to room temperature before moving from one extreme temperature to the other, for example, unthaw completely when moving from freezer to microwave.

Because Vision is made of a glass-ceramic mixture instead of a metal alloy, it was designed to withstand a high range of temperatures, both hot and cold. The glass-ceramic mixture is absolutely non-permeable, so the cooking surface will not react with acidic foods or absorb food smells.

There are no limitations on the type of utensil that could be used with this type of product; metals will not scratch the surface. In addition, it is considered among the easiest cookware to clean after food has burnt inside it.

Cleaning:

Cleaning a piece of Vision cookware is easy. It is 100% dishwasher safe, but can also be hand-washed. Abrasive cleaners are not recommended, but nylon pads and a baking soda/water paste can be used for tough stuck-on foods.

The abrasive cleaners, such as scouring powder or pads, have been reported by some consumers to scratch the surface.

Consumer Information

In the early to mid-90's, the Consumer Product Safety Commission received a number of complaints that Vision products will unexpectedly explode or shatter into sharp pieces when dropped or when left untended on a very hot stove. Although the reports of these incidences are not in abundance, the threat of danger is still very real.

For this reason, consumers are advised to cease using this cookware as soon as any scratches, chips or cracks are visible.

On the other hand, Vision cookware is still in high demand. The groups that continue to demand the special glass-ceramic cookware include antique collectors, cookware collectors and those loyal customers who have used the cookware for years without incident. The glass-ceramic nature of the cookware is considered extremely bio-friendly and many individuals still prefer that type of cookware over any others.

Where to purchase:

Some pieces with the Vision cookware name can still be purchased online but if you want used cookware, it is best to look for used cookware on sites such as e-bay and Amazon as well as auctions, flea markets and garage sales.

Not All Are Equal - How to Choose Microwave Oven Glass Cookware

If you are familiar with your microwave, you have probably noticed the absence of plastic in any area that comes into contact with the microwave rays. While the body of the microwave is made primarily of metal and some models may be coated with plastic, where the buttons or the display is, none of them are missing the microwave oven glass. The door of the microwave oven is most likely made of sturdy see through glass, which allows you to view what is happening inside the oven and also keeps you safe from the radiation. There is also a sturdy revolving turntable on which you place food to be cooked or heated and this too is made of heat-resistant glass, which is probably not unbreakable, so don't drop it while cleaning.

Glass Cookware

Traditionally, the best cookware to use when cooking in a microwave oven is glass. The glass cookware designed for this purpose is thick, sturdy and heat - resistant, anything you can use in an oven can most certainly be used in a microwave. What you want to be careful of however is cookware that has metal plating around it, often metal, silver or gold inlay which can cause your microwave to spark while heating food and is unsafe for cooking. Make sure your glassware is microwave safe as it can either break or crack in the microwave if subjected to higher levels of heat. Most ceramic containers, particularly those that are oven or kiln fired, can be used in the microwave. Do make sure that the paint used is not metallic in any way. Glass is the number one choice for cooking in a microwave oven.

Glass Cookware

There are many companies who manufacture glassware designed especially for use with your microwave, many of them do double duty as serving dishes, or can be used to store food in the refrigerator.

Metal and paper should not be used in a microwave at all, unless it is specifically mentioned that is can be used safely in a microwave oven.

Despite that it is advisable that you check to make sure what temperature can it be used at or under which conditions.

When it comes to plastic, most plastic items cannot be used safely in the microwave as they are likely to melt. However certain manufactures do market products that are safe for use in your oven. Again make sure that they are indeed microwave safe before using them.

The reasons for using microwave safe glass when cooking in a microwave oven are many, besides being the safest method of cooking, glass also does not react with the food and alter it in any way. In addition the microwave rays can pass easily through glassware which allows for food to be cooked or heated properly.

Environmentally Friendly Cookware - Glass

While the non-stick cookware has been getting special attention lately for the use of PFTE and the cessation of its use, many people have forgotten about one of the first environmentally friendly materials used in cookware, glass. Glass is an amazing material in and of itself. It is made predominantly from sand; more specifically silicates found in sand. It has the great advantage of being made of the Earth and so it is easily returned to the Earth.

Glass Cookware

Tempered glass is even better because it is shatter resistant, but don't go throwing it against a wall and expect it not to break, and can be used in the oven, freezer, refrigerator, and microwave. This simplifies your cooking life and adds no harmful chemicals to your food. Cleaning is a snap as almost all glass cookware on the market is dishwasher safe; in fact you would have to look hard and long to find a glass piece of cookware that cannot go into the dishwasher.

Glass Cookware

Once the gals dish has been used for a lifetime it can be easily recycled into more glass cookware, windshields, drinking glasses or anything else. Glass has a fairly good heat transfer rate and for its price you should have several glass baking and cooking dishes at your disposal at all times. Not to mention that virtually any recipe can be prepared in a glass dish from cakes to pasta and from roasts to soufflés. Glass cookware also allows the chef or cook to see the progress without opening the dish letting the heat escape. When was the last time you looked into meat roaster without lifting off the lid?

Glass provides us with a safe, and recyclable material for cooking while simultaneously helping to create less waste. Almost any style of cookware can be fashioned from glass; roasters, baking pans, casserole pans and more.

Best Cookware For a Glass Cooktop

Glass cooktops are among the most popular designs for ease of cleaning and overall convenience. The substance in these ranges is constructed of a special material that can withstand temperatures in excess of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Glass Cookware

The radiant heat type of glass cooktop uses about 20 percent radiant heat and 80 percent conducted heat. For this reason, it is extremely important to choose the correct type of cookware for your range.

Glass Cookware

Without regard to the brand name of any particular cookware, the most important design element of the cookware you choose is that it must have a flat bottom. Not just mostly flat, but extremely flat. The best way to test for flatness is the ruler test. Take a standard 12 inch ruler and place the edge of it across the pan at the center. When you do this, look closely to see if there are any areas of light showing under the ruler. It is also acceptable to have a slight concave toward the center of the pan.

Another way to test if your pan is flat, is to place it on your glass cooktop and add one half cup water to it. Heat the water to boiling and check to see that the water heats and boils uniformly across the entire pan.

The best performing pots and pans for a glass top is one with a stainless steel bottom. Pans with copper or aluminum bottoms will transfer heat very well, but the soft metal will tend to mark up the specially designed glass. Ironically glass cookware is the least desirable type of material to use on a glass cooktop and is not recommended.

Whether you have a basic set of pots and pans from your major retail outlet or a designer set you received as a wedding gift, the name on the pans is not as important as the style, design, and material you use with your glass cooktop.

Glass Cookware For Stylish And Practical Cooking

Many amateur cooks are wary of using glass cookware for baking or microwave cooking because of their weight and fragility. Although they are somewhat difficult to handle, they are much easier to clean and look good as new even after many years of use.

Glass Cookware

Glass cookware can either be ceramic cookware or items made of clear glass. It is more commonly used in baking but stovetop models are also available. The greatest advantage of glass cookware is that they can be placed in the oven or used on stovetops, used as serving containers on the dining table, and employed to keep food in the ref or the freezer for future cooking.

Glass Cookware

This is definitely something you can't do with unsophisticated-looking aluminum pans or copper pots which are only meant for the kitchen! Ceramic cookware, especially, are lovely to look at even on the dining table. They are durable and chip- and heat-resistant, but clear glass cookware can easily shatter when dropped or mishandled.

Professional chefs use glass cookware for baking simply because of their elegance. For those who consider baking as an art, it is also important that the sides of the cookware are clear because there are fussy bakers who even do designs when layering baked desserts. Clear glass cookware thus help them show these patterns off.

Glass cookware are impressive heat conductors and a lot of cooking time is saved when using them. They can also be used for the microwave oven, unlike aluminum cookware which has to be kept away from this sensitive appliance.

They may be a breeze to clean, but there are certain types of glass cookware which cannot be scoured safely with tough wire scouring pads. These are pieces which have been treated with non-stick coatings.

For these particular items, it would be better to use plastic scouring pads. If food still cannot be scrubbed off, it is recommended that you first soak it in a soapy solution and get back to the job after several hours.

Several manufacturers have earned bankable reputations in the business of creating high-quality glass cookware. Their products have been certified resistant to extreme heat, are stylish, and are proven versatile - that is, you can easily use it for cooking, for entertaining, and for storing. What other material has all those qualities?

Pyrex Cookware - A Special Type Of Heat-Resistant Glass

Sick and tired of burned, undercooked, or unevenly baked breads, cookies, or rolls produced when using traditional metal cookware? Consider Pyrex, a special type of heat-resistant glass. Used by skilled cooks across the world to produce perfect baked goods, these items come in a variety of different forms for a variety of different functions. Examples include virtually every conceivable shape and size of casserole dish, cake pan, loaf pan, and others.

Glass Cookware

It holds up remarkably well over time, immune to the rusting and oxidizing effects that plague aluminum and other metal cookware. The material also resists stains, and thus should never become discolored even after repeated use. Because Pyrex cookware is naturally non-stick, it achieves this and other properties even without any chemical coating (such as teflon) which can be scratched off over time. Lastly, food comes off easily during cleanup, without requiring prolonged or difficult scrubbing.

Glass Cookware

As a result of its natural non-stick properties, Pyrex cookware requires only a light dusting of non-stick spray when creating baked goods such as cookies, rolls, or bread. Even sticky items like lasagna will be able to be served with a minimum of mess when using a Pyrex casserole dish. When cleaning, food remnants come off easily, meaning less time spent scrubbing and more time spent enjoying one's creations. It heats perfectly and evenly. This means that your baked goods will brown slowly and evenly, cutting down on the time they need to be in the oven. They will be resistant to burning, overcooking, and undercooking. In addition, many of the baking problems experienced in aluminum cookware, such as uneven cooking or fallen crusts, are eliminated when using Pyrex.

Pyrex tableware, such as plates, bowls, and serving dishes, are also tough to beat. Traditional materials such as ceramic and plastic just cannot deal with heat as well as Pyrex does. As an added bonus, Pyrex tableware looks great and is available in a wide range of colors to fit any decorating scheme.

Pyrex is a distinct form of heat-resistant glass. Food cooked in Pyrex heats slowly and evenly. This ends the problems of food not cooking properly and results in a perfect brown crust every time.

Gourmet Cookware Requires The Finest Elements

When we speak of gourmet cooking, we refer to not just a celebration of tastes but also the use of equipment that is aesthetically superior over others. One need only to take a look at some of the most popular 4-star chefs and their TV shows to find out what gourmet cookware is all about.

Glass Cookware

Certainly the most finicky celebrity chefs prefer glass, copper, or high-quality stainless steel cookware. Very seldom do we see tacky aluminum pots and pans being bandied about in gourmet cooking lessons. Copper is the cookware of choice of many chefs because of its classy texture and sheen.

Glass Cookware

Glass is also preferred because it looks stylish, be it clear glass or ceramic gourmet cookware. Apart from this, copper and glass are also highly functional because they are excellent heat conductors and can cut cooking time to a fraction of what it would take when using inferior materials.

The TV chefs we often watch even make use of tiny glass bowls to hold the sliced ingredients and the sauces to be used for the dishes. Desserts are tastefully served in glass containers of various shapes and sizes, all complementing the delicacies they hold. Of course, when we speak of fine dining, everything is required to be transferred to expensive china upon serving, but if time is limited, then gourmet cookware [http://www.cookware-help.com/Articles/Nonstick_Cookware.php] made of glass could do the trick.

Even the sounds that glass makes are a lot more pleasant to the ears than the "banging of pots and pans," which is something we usually associate with scenarios of hot, dingy kitchens and sweaty chefs. Both copper and glass cost more than your usual cookware, so it's important to keep them looking new by handling them well and using only the appropriate cleaning materials.

Gourmet cooking is an art which aspiring chefs now strive to perfect over several years. As such, all the senses should be aroused and made ready for the pleasant experience of fine dining - and this means using only the best gourmet cookware made of copper and glass.
